Revision
Why?
To improve a piece of writing. More specific improvements might include
- Clarifying
- Strengthening an argument
Notice that no-one said “fixing mistakes.” You certainly can and should fix mistakes, but revision should involve a much larger view of your work than just fixing things.
Sources for Revision
Readers’ feedback, e.g., people you ask to look at a draft because they have expertise in an area you want reactions from, random friends you ask to look at it just for the extra pair of eyes, etc.
You, whether in response to rereading what you’ve written, rewriting parts of it, or just reflection after taking a little time away from it.
No matter where the inspiration comes from, you ultimately decide whether to make a revision or not.
Peer Reviews
Provide peers’ feedback on your writing as a source of revision ideas.
Do them for the draft warm-up essays. See general guidelines in Canvas.
Next
Come get my feedback on your warm-up drafts tomorrow or Thursday.
Read Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Gold Bug”
Two things to talk about:
- Poe’s use of race in the story and its connections to on-going racism in America. You will probably find some of Poe’s treatment of race offensive; apologies for the offense, but it’s important to see it and understand how deeply embedded in American perceptions of race it is. We’ll start talking about this on Thursday.
- The cryptosystem around which the story revolves. We’ll talk about this in a few weeks.
