Due Dates

The dates on essay handouts are the most authoritative ones.

Apologies that the syllabus has been out-of-synch regarding due dates for the Enigma essays (the electronic version has now been fixed regarding those dates).

Upcoming Talk

Harold Hongju Koh, “The Trump Administration and International Law” (2018-19 Phi Beta Kappa Lecture).

(Harold Hongju Koh is a professor and past dean at Yale Law School, a past US assistant secretary of state, and sometime advisor to the US State Department.)

Thursday (October 25), 4:00 PM, Doty Recital Hall.

Up to 2 points of “essay” extra credit for attending the lecture and writing roughly 1 paragraph about reactions you have to it, connections you make to it, etc.

Paragraphs are “due” any time before our final exam.

Comments

Quotations. Beware of overusing quotations. Unless the original words really add something distinctive to your essay, use a paraphrase or summary (although I’m sure some writers would say that judicious use of quotations, even with no other “something distinctive,” livens things up by bringing in a change of pace).

Sources. Pay attention to how authoritative your sources are. They don’t have to be scholarly, but should have...

Also be careful about sources who were actually involved in the events in question (e.g., Bletchley Park veterans). They have a unique first-hand experience, but may also be subtly biased towards accentuating the importance of their contribution, or may be too close to it to see the whole picture.

Citations. You must cite your sources, but I don’t care what style you use. If you’re already familiar with one, use it. If you want suggestions, Turabian is well-documented at Milne Library’s web site.
