MATLAB Installation Guide

èYou must be connected to the Geneseo network for the license to work properly. If you want

to use MATLAB off-campus, you must…

SET UP A VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK (VPN)

· Go to the CIT Self-Help wiki (http://cit.geneseo.edu à Click “Self-Help” on the sidebar) and find the article “Virtual Private Network (VPN)” under the heading “Geneseo Network”.

· The “Find” feature in your web browser will be useful for navigating this page, just hit Ctrl+F on a PC or Command+F on a Mac, type in “VPN” and hit “Find Next”.

· If you have a PC, just follow the instructions for the Microsoft Client configuration.

· If you have a Mac, congratulations, you have to download something else before we get you going. Just follow the instructions for the Cisco VPN software.

· The VPN can be finicky. If you have any problems, stop by South Hall 225A, send an email to helpdesk@geneseo.edu or call 245-5588. Your best bet is to go to the office with your laptop. If they are not very busy, someone can usually help you immediately.

Now, whenever you want to use MATLAB off-campus, just follow the instructions for connecting to the VPN. When you’re done, simply disconnect.

Woo hoo! You’re almost there. Now, you must actually install MATLAB.

INSTALLING MATLAB*

· If you’re using a PC, follow the CIT Self-Help guide https://wiki.geneseo.edu:8443/display/cit/MatLab+R2008a+Installation+Guide.

o You are going to have to create the “Licenses” folder mentioned in “Screen 5” of the Self-Help guide.

o If the installation wizard asks, say that you are going to manage the licenses manually.

· If you’re using a Mac, download the MATLAB package from the “Academic” section of http://software.geneseo.edu . There is no guide to follow, since the package takes care of licensing and everything else for you.

INSTALLING THE DISCRETE WAVELETS TOOLBOX

· Go to http://cam.mathlab.stthomas.edu/wavelets/packagesmatlab.php and download the DW Toolbox ZIP file.

· Follow the instructions under the Download link. You’re going to have to remember where you unzip the folder. I personally unzipped it into the “toolbox” folder in MATLAB\R2009a, just to keep things all in the same place.

· If a dialogue box pops up saying something about the “pathdef.m” file, I found that unzipping the DW toolbox to a different folder and using that folder fixes the problem.

· Restart MATLAB and everything should be working!

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF IT WORKED?

· Back in the Command Window of Matlab, Under HELP, select PRODUCT HELP.

· If the Discrete Wavelets Toolbox is listed, then you were successful.

· If not, then try restarting Matlab. Then look to see if the Discrete Wavelets Toolbox is listed under PRODUCT HELP.

* If you are on campus, then downloading the PC version will be easier if you use a hard-wired Ethernet connection. It will be slower if you use a wireless connection. It will be exceedingly slow if you try to unload it off campus (it’s 4G). The Mac version has been compressed to 500MB and will download much more quickly.
